A Guide to Bird Perch Diameters for our Pet Birds

In the wild, birds navigate a landscape of unpredictable, natural branches. In a home environment, providing the correct perch size prevents foot fatigue, prevents arthritis, and keeps claws naturally trimmed.

Daytime Play & Well-being Perches

During daytime hours, when your bird is moving, playing, climbing and exercising variety is essential.

  • Vary the Textures: Combine natural wood branches with bird-safe UK woods such as apple, sycamore or birch.

  • Vary the Shapes: Natural branches naturally taper and feature irregular knots. This forces the muscles and tendons in your bird’s feet to stretch and flex in different ways, promoting circulation and preventing stiffness.

  • Vary the Diameters: Include a couple of perches which are slightly smaller and slightly larger than their ideal size around their activity areas to keep their grip versatile.

The Sleeping Perch

While variety powers daytime play, night time requires consistency.

Birds sleep for 10 to 12 hours a night, standing on one or both feet the entire time. During sleep, a bird's feet engage an automatic locking mechanism that keeps them secured to the branch without conscious effort.

If a bird sleeps on a perch that is too thick, their tendons are constantly strained. If it is too thin, their claws can dig into their own foot pads or overlap uncomfortably.

Best Practices for Sleep Setup:

  • Target the Sweet Spot: High up in the cage where birds naturally prefer to roost, place a natural branch that sits at their ideal diameter.

  • Keep it Stable: Ensure the sleeping perch is secure, clean, and free from swinging toys or distracting elements.

  • Check the Grip: When perched for the night, their front and back claws should comfortably grip the branch with a clear gap between their toes underneath, approximately 75% of the way around the perch.

By combining an irregular, varied playground during the day with an ergonomically perch at night, you will keep your bird’s feet healthy, strong, and comfortable for years to come!
